The district fared better than Canterbury and New Zealand

The Selwyn District fared better economically than Canterbury and New Zealand as a whole in the December quarter.
Non-residential building consents to the value of $9.2 million were issued in Selwyn during the quarter. The value of consents increased by 38% in the year to December 2009 compared with the same period the previous year. The growth in Selwyn was higher than Canterbury (24.4%), and higher than the country as a whole (0.2%).
Overall GDP declined in Selwyn in the 12 months to December 2009 compared with the previous twelve months by 1.4%, however the district fared better than Canterbury (-2.6%) and New Zealand (-1.7%).
The level of GDP in Selwyn equalled $792 million in the year to December 2009. This accounted for 5.2% of GDP in the Canterbury region, and 0.6% of national GDP during the year.
